Gamble of the Weather
In an article for The Conversation titled I feel more like a professional gambler, John Whitton explores how British farmers are struggling with the impacts of climate change, describing how extreme weather has damaged soil, delayed harvests, and made planting feel like a game of chance. This sense of emotional and practical uncertainty inspired the creation of the Gamble of the Weather, an interactive print based on the French roulette layout. Instead of numbers, the design features Britain’s recorded temperature extremes arranged chaotically to reflect the volatility of the climate. Gamble of the Weather aims to emulate how farmers are being forced to gamble with their livelihoods due to unreliable weather patterns. By turning climate data into a familiar format associated with risk and chance, the piece encourages viewers to confront the realities of climate change in Britian.
